The Drafted Boys of Fantasy Summer

From Commisioner Dale

Owners,

Here's an updated draft pool list. I'm sorry this took so long to get to you.

As an effect of that delay, I'm extending the grace period by 48 hours, to 11:59 pm PDT, Thursday, April 8th.

Also, I DLed my CI Spezio and drafted INF Bloomquist in his place.

Take care all,

Commish Dale.

The current draft pool can now be found here. No need to keep reposting relatively the same data. With each update, new rosters will be posted (most recent update, 5/08/04).

You can still track roster changes to the available pool by team here. Further, ESPN tracks nearly every stat that we use, so you can run your own scouting reports pretty easily.

Owners, Teams, and Reserved players

During the draft, each team filled out their active roster. With a small number of substitutions (which will be documented on the individual team pages) over the first few days (mainly DL moves),

The opening rosters were (after the grace period for moves):

(in draft order, with post-draft notes from the Commish)

Commish's Notes: One of the top 3 OFs, plus an IF without a bum in the lot. How long Nomah remains DLed is the question. If Pedro stays healthy, this rotation looks good; just don't bank on Loaiza to have a year like 2003. Jim also gambles in RP spots, hoping Arroyo and Osbourne pick up a few slop starts.

A sound, solid team with no obvious defects, but will his bats be able to keep pace with teams that have more high-profile bashers? Can Bagwell, Erstad, and Williams stay healthy? If not, Andy will have a hard time keeping up with the pack.

Commish's Notes: Leon did a fine job with his first ever Roto draft, making some good choices and few enough rookie-mistake picks not to hurt himself overmuch. Prior's and Nixon's injuries and potential comebacks by Hinske, Lankford, and Garcia hold the key to the Cubs' Roto fortunes.

Commish's Notes: Holy crap; look at the monster mashers these guys assembled (even if we all did age a few years while they did it)! A fine IF, a top 3 OF, a sturdy rotation, and a fine pen. These guys may work slow, but they do good work, that's for sure.

Commish's Notes: A nice mix of proven veterans and young hitters with plenty of upside define Eck's position players. He's also likely got the 2nd best bullpen, with 2 full-time closers—and one of them with the name Smoltz. I wonder if he ignored his rotation too long tho—there's not a $20 hurler in the lot.

Commish's Notes: A strong IF (especially if Glaus puts numbers like he did in '02), and 3 OFs all have at least 30-HR power, but I fall about 1 bat short from where I'd like to be. The pitching staff looks good, with a strong rotation and, possibly, all 4 RPs getting shots to rack up saves.

Commish's Notes: Rich clearly puts up the best catching tandem in the league, but outside of Thome, he lacks a true Roto slugger. His pitching staff is good, and could be great if Brown and Milton can stay healthy all year; the same goes for the OF with Drew and Edmonds.

Commish's Notes: A solid rotation is what leaps out at me with Scott's team, but I worry about a seeming lack of big Roto lumber; two OFs aren't even starters. Finding full-timers there and having Burroughs, Salmon, and Olerud hit like they can will help, but will it be enough to keep up?
