Huh

I’ve just returned home (with a snootful), and decided to turn on the CD changer.

Now, some of you may remember the story of my 100 disc changer, a once cool, but now sadly obsolete piece of audiophilia. It was the first thing I selected as a management reward from my tenure at Schwan’s, where stuff was valued higher than money.

And every year, I load it up with 100 titles from my very large collection of digitized plastic. 100 titles that all have a common theme.

First, it was Angry men. Then, Angry women. Followed by classical, then showtunes, and then finally (last year) Music without instruments.

However, I rapidly discovered that I did not have 100 CDs containing music without instruments. So a modification was necessary, and I went with music I might hear in a dance club, which could not be produced naturally. Failing again, I mostly removed the latter qualification, but over a year’s time, three jobs, and two homes, I never came even close to 100 discs, played in rotation.

Gaining a roommate was a big factor; Strand wouldn’t stand for most of my music, but we did have many overlaps. As such, we eventually just listened to the radio, or watched some sporting event though the magic of cable.

This post began when I turned on my CD player, and realized that it had indeed been well over 3 months since I had last done so. In fact, my use of the player pre-dates my current employer, something which is both amusing and appalling.

So, I need to unload the player. But I have no idea of what genre will be loading it again in the near future. with the advent of I-tunes, I-pods, and mp3, do I really need to limit myself to 100 discs? I believe the answer to be yes, but I don’t want to buy the little plastic thingies, since filling it up will not take very long at all, and doing so effectively invalidates my large investment in plastic?

Any thoughts? I need a theme for 2005, and even though it’s not a priority, I probably need it soon. I think I’ve got one in mind, but I’m willing to take suggestions.

Fire away.
