Games and Diversions

About a month ago, I shamelessly stole a meme from kistha, and made it my own. The rules were as follows:

(the game)
The lyrics meme…
Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

Now me, I design games. So I weighted each of the 30 songs by the probable player base, the complexity of the lyrics, the popularity of the song itself, and the mythical factor of “because I said so.”

One might think I’d have posted this recap then, but about a week later I got mega depressed, and very, very angry at some parts of my life. Plus, people stopped posting.

So this time, I’m adding another rule, and capping the game at 30 days, – 1 day for each correct guess. This will make things a little more interesting, and I can maintain the fiction that I am smart, witty, and eccentric on a more regular basis.

I love the internets.

Here are the “winners” from last month’s low endurance trail.

The Scores:

Total Points awarded

Ironymaiden: 40. The clear victor in this mad chase, J scored early and often with hard to guess songs, and cleaned up on bonus points.

Delaina Dancey: 35. A towering blast of points was awarded to the beautiful Mrs. Dancey. Although second overall in points, DD ranks first in correct guesses (7), and scored a strong leadoff shot (hers was the first ballot cast)

Kistha: 19. Our Bronze medallist had a respectable first salvo, with some pretty impressive bonus points. Kudos again for the meme in the first place

Talentlessclod: 9 points. Would have been more, but although Warren did recognize one of the two list songs on which he played lead guitar, he did not expressly name it. Instead, he offhandly referenced it with sarcasm. Bad form, what? And he’s English now, to boot.

And now, the songs and info. I’ve added new pithy content, so that you don’t feel you’ve seen all this before (because you haven’t. look for yourself, and stuff). We here at bhagwanx.com are committed to the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

And stuff.

30 more tomorrow, for another 30 days of contest. Put your thinking caps on, as these will be coming from my home collection, and not my work machine.

That’s right. Expect Death Metal, Classical music, and movie soundtracks. Along with even MORE of the following.

It’s my way.

(the songs)

1. Hey Hey!

Down to Dunwich, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets (Cthulhu Strikes Back, 1995 Divine Industries)

It bears extra mocking that talentlessclod is the lead guitarist for this band.

2. Well I won’t back down

I won’t Back Down. Johnny Cash. Words and Music by Tom Petty (American III, 2000 Sony records) (ironymaiden)

3. Don’t talk, I will listen

Don’t Talk, 10000 maniacs (MTV Unplugged , 1993 Electra/Wea )

4. Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime Coconut, Harry Nilsson (Resevoir Dogs Soundtrack, 1992 MCA) (kistha)

5. We are building a religion Comfort Eagle, Cake (Comfort Eagle, 2001 Sony)

6. Hey! Mr. Postman, the Marvelletes (1961, Motown records)

No-one said it would be easy. I hit a period, questionmark, or exclamation point, line is over. Commas, semicolons, and colons mean keep typing. Rules is rules.

Man’s got to stand for something, or he’ll fall for anything.

7. What I chose to do, is of no concern to you My life, Dido (No Angel, 1999 Arista records)

8. Sir, if you don’t mind, I’d rather be alone What part of No don’t you understand?, Lorrie Morgan (Greatest Hits, 1995 BNA entertainment)

Yeah, I like country music. Lump it.

9. Hey, hey, give them what they want Candy Everybody Wants, 10000 Maniacs ( Candy Everybody Wants, EP single. 1993 Elektra/Wea) (ironymaiden)

10. Ooogachaka, ooga ooga, oogachaka Hooked on a Feeling, Blue Swede (Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack, 1992 MCA) (kistha)

11. Bird of prey, Bird of prey, flying high, flying High. Sunset (Bird Of Prey) / Phat Planet (Album Version)/Speak Lord (I Get Deep). Fatboy Slim (Fatboy SLim: Live on Brighton Beach (2002, MCA ) (ironymaiden)

12. Baby, I’m so into you. Crazy, Britney Spears (…Baby One More time, 1999 Jive records)

Don’t ask. Just….don’t

13. Woman, I can’t remember a woman Daughter of Darkness, Tom Jones (20 Great Love songs, 1996 Disky Communications Europe)

This song was worth 30 points. In case anyone was wondering.

14. I believe the stars keep shining all through the night I Believe, Chris Isaak (Forever Blue, 1995 Reprise/Wea)

I feel compelled to relate that I am now on my 5th copy of this album. Three previous copies were stolen out of my trucks, the other was lent out and never returned.

I really like it. A lot. So no, you can’t borrow it.

15. Young teacher, the subject of schoolgirl fantasy Don’t Stand So Close to me, The Police (Zenyetta Mondatta, 1980 A&M records) (Delaina Dancey)

16. Well I’m a-running down the road, trying to loosen my load. Take it Easy, The Eagles (Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, 1976 Asylum records) (Delaina Dancey)

17. It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone It’s not Unusual. Belly. Words and music by Gordon Mills and Leslie Reed (Gepetto EP (Remix) (Disc 2)) (Delaina Dancey)

18. What’s the matter Mary Jane, had a hard day? Mary Jane, Alanis Morrisette (Jagged Little Pill – Acoustic. 2006, Maverick) (kistha)

19. Muzaik, Muzaik, Muzaik Muzaik, Infernal (Muzaik, 2002 Robbins records)

This trance track was worth 50 points. The line above occurs 1:36 into an 8 minute remix. I had to listen to it twice just to get those three words deciphered.

20. On a quest, for the holy grail Fools’ Paradise, Oingo Boingo (Dead Man’s Party, 1990 MCA)

This is the first CD I ever purchased. For nostalgia’s sake, I just loaded it into the first CD player I ever purchased. I got the disc 2 days after the player, to see if it would work after my repairs.

It did.

At the same time, I also purchased Kansas’ Greatest hits, and Sound of Movies: 20 Great Themes, by the Allen Toussaint orchestra.

I won’t be listening to these discs tonight.

21. Under a dark sky’s sails, over the reefs of moonlight Why Should I Cry for You? Sting (the Soul Cages, 1991 A&M) 10 points, ironymaiden

again, correct lyric is

Under the dog star sail
Over the reefs of moonshine

Go Figure.

22. Truckin’ got my chips cashed in. Truckin’, The Grateful Dead (American Beauty, 1970 Rhino/wea) (talentlessclod).

23. All day I grunt and groan, gotta haul that stone Digging up the World, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets (The Great Old Ones, 19XX Divine Industries)

Because he is my brother, and because the mocking is an important part of my relationship with him, at this time I reveal that talentlessclod sent me this disc from his personal collection, along with some pocket lint and a truly horrible comic book from the 80s. He found all items while cleaning out his house. What’s worse, only the CD was new to me; I already owned the other two.

Did I mention that Warren failed to correctly identify the songs on which he is the lead guitarist? Also, when he committed this failure, it was while returning to Canada to record tracks for a now album.

Love you, W. Call me.

24. You let me violate you Closer, Richard Cheese. Words and music by Trent Reznor. Arranged by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine (Lounge Against the Machine, 2000) (Delaina Dancey)

25. I don’t believe in superstars, organic food, or foreign cars I Believe in You, Don Williams (1980) Delaina Dancey

26. Hey, Heeeeeeeeeeeey! Rock and Roll part 2, Gary Glitter (Jock Jams: The All-Star Jock Jams, 2001 Tommy Boy records)

5 points. I am frankly amazed that no one got this. But then again, over 50% of my friends, acquaintances and associates are more familiar with this version.

It was in the rotation, just didn’t draw the straw

27. All, my, friends, love a low rider Low Rider War (Why Can’t We Be Friends, 1975. Label unavailable) (Delaina Dancey).

28. Upon a secret journey, I met a holy man Secret Journey, The Police (Ghost In The Machine, 1981 A&M records)

This is a Perfect Album. I believe that his may be one of the 10 best-produced albums of all time.

I will argue this point fiercely and loudly next time I get drunk. But the odds are high that nobody cares as much about this album as I do. So instead, I will take some frabjous advice, and tone it back to 6.

I really, really like this album.

29. Whoa-o-oh yea yeah! I will be there, Britney Spears (…Baby One More time, 1999 Jive records)

Both this and the last one were worth 25 points. I think I am the only person I know that even owns this album, although Inkslinger has listened to it more than once.

Really, don’t ask. But you can read the story about when and why I bought it here

3 of the albums referenced in that rant offered up songs for this game. Funny how life works, sometimes. There were over 200 albums to pick from.

30. I’m broke but I’m happy, I’m poor but I’m kind Hand in my Pocket, Alanis Morrisette (Jagged Little Pill, 1995. Maverick Records) (Delaina Dancey)
