First shots
Some of you kids get up early, but not early enough to catch me before I’m at work.
Here are the first CORRECT guesses for the June music madness.
Only 25 more guessing days until contest’s end on July 3
Chiming in at the 7:50 AM, Ironymaiden draws first blood with
2. No Woman, No Cry. The King (Gravelands, 1999 Ark 21 records. Words and Music by Bob Marley and the wailers)
3 points. The King is truly a refreshing change amongst Elvis impersonators. For he does not pretend to be Mr. Presley, but instead “channels” him from the hereafter. Further, he also expresses the musical hits of other famous dead people, in this case the Soul Rebel himself.
This album opens with a version of “Come as you are” that will have you on the floor rolling. I spotted this album at lunch one day, and picked it up. We had to pull the truck over from laughing too hard while the first track played.
25. Oh my God, Becky! Baby Got Back, Richard Cheese. Words and music by Sir Mixalot. Arranged by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine (Lounge Against the Machine, 2000) 2 points
The first repeat artist and album guessed, but possibly not the last. I handed the headphones to Carter when Subversive Puppet Show first ported the tracks to my machine. Being a naturally excitable person, Carter promptly fell on the floor and stopped breathing for a little bit, all while maintaining a death grip on the earpeices, ltst any cheesy goodness escape his power.
And an incorrect guess on #26
Next to the plate was the monkey king at 8:44 AM, offering these:
1. The World is a Vampire Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Smashing Pumpkins (Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, 1995 Chrysalis/BMI) 2 points.
I actually sandbagged this one, and did not complete the line with “sent to drain.” In 1996, I was living in the Tri-cities, working nights over in Walla Walla. this led to some interesting meal arrangements, most common of which was the all you can eat buffet down ad GodFather’s pizza. This track, and Spin the Black Circle (pearl Jam) were on near constant play in the pizza house jukebox, mainly becuase I had many, many quarters. Especially since Our Dave worked there, and kept giving us all coupons for free buffet and/or salad bar, with purchase of a drink.
But most fun at those lunches were the high scores I would rack up on the Whirlwind and Speed Zone pinball machines. All told, for 5 bucks I was entertained for about 3 hours, then went home to play video games for a while before the 55 mile commute began.
Good times.
7. Whereabouts folks go when they die? Lake of Fire, Nirvana(MTV Unplugged in New York, 1994 Geffen records. Originally recorded by the Meat Puppets)
6 points. 5 bonus points for also naming the Nirvana cover in his response, thus correctly identifying the exact track, however incidentally.
In a lyrics game first, Delaina Dancey also scores 5 bonus points on this one, for her (later) guess that correctly noted the lyric is “Where do bad folks go when they die?”
Who knew? Besides her, that is. She also mentioned the Nirvana track, but Baur already has those bonus points. Sorry, Challie!
Speaking of the good counselor, at 11:59 she threw down with:
8. I’ve got your picture. Turning Japanese, the Vapors (Living in Oblivion: the 80’s greatest hits, vol 1 1993, BMG Music Club) 7 points
You’d think I’d have a lot of pith to share regarding such an 80’s classic. But really, the refrain of “no sex, no drugs, no wine, no women, no fun” pretty much sums up my personal experiences of the 80s.
Except for all the sex, drugs, wine, women and fun I was having. Booooooooooooyaaa!
And an incorrect guess for #29. Since she foolishly chose to use NEITHER web interface for her responses, we can all share in her mocking as I reveal that it is in fact NOT Enter Sandman, by Metallica. Silly lawyers, always have to be different. her other three guesses were correct, but had already been awarded, except as noted above.
And at 1:39 PM, Butterflydrming incorrectly guessed #8
More later, but keep those guesses coming!
