Two times the Funny

So I had a good weekend, and consumed much bread.

Mistake.

I also consumed scotch whiskey. Scotch was my fallback position when I cut out Beer last year, and is most probably the reason I did not immediately lose any weight.

Because I certainly did not lose any this weekend.

From Friday’s 188 to Monday Morning, 2:30 AM’s 194, there were exactly 3 drinks of scotch. but to my recollection, there was a starch at pretty much every meal. I expected a couple lbs, but not to undo an entire cycle in the process.

6 hours later, I weighed in at 192. Thank heavens for resting metabolic rate, I guess.

24 hours later, (and one day in to the now/then necessary new plan) I weigh in at 189. That is so amazingly funny to me that I am almost without words.

Here’s the second part of the funny.

At the party Saturday night, my friend Tommy let us know that his “spare” television was up for grabs. I said yes, of course, because I know lots of people that need a 42 inch TV with bells and whistles. Sure, it’s heavy and large, but this can be dealt with easy when someone is already moving their entire apartment.

The funny is as follows.

Tommy is part of one of my 15* distinct groups of Seattle freinds. In particular, he is a member of the “Bothell High” circle, which is very focused on the East side and surrounding suburbs, and mainy tech-focused, with a healthy dose of gamer thrown in.

I know the Bothell High kids (of which I know Tommy as an after market addition, met a few years after I moved to Seattle) becuase of their association with the Science Fiction Convention Dreamcon, in particular their freindship with my freind Mindy. Mindy I know from a few chance meetings over the years when I myself was a science fiction convention organizer. In particular, from one cold and windy ConComCon, at which I also witnessed some of the first playtest sessions for Legend of the Five Rings, and unsuccessfully campaigned to be the head of hte Northwest Science Fiction Association.

I was there through another group of freinds, as a part of our successful bid to Bring WesterCon to Spokane in 1999. Very few of them live in Seattle, but I am compelled to give a shout-out to my dry-side brethren. For those who know, there is a bottle on the wall from that convention. (also, approximately 40 lbs ago)

But back on track. I moved to Seattle in 1997, to take a job working on and with the game mentioned above. But it was my desire to get into the publishing business, and specifically Dungeons and Dragons, that sealed the deal. The folks from TSR were accquired by Wizards of the Coast (Group #3, for those keeping score) that same summer, and I came into fast freindship with many of them.

So much so that the WotC group has segmented out into the Expatriot TSR group (group 4), with whom I am still close. Through my freind frabjousdave, I met yet another group of folks, a very literary group of neo-gamers and artistic folks. In this group is (Group 5) ironymaiden, who will be receiving not the television no longer needed by the person getting Tommy’s TV, but a larger set no longer needed by yet another freind of that person, who falls into the Seattle Gamers group (Group 6, which really can be split into two diferent groups, RPGA and non-RPGA) .

(* the other “groupable” groups are Livejournal denizens, Wet-side science fiction promoters and professionals, Bellingham residents, Sports fans, Eric’s freinds, Gina’s freinds, co-workers, and ex-girlfriends. An ever rotating combination of the above occupies most activities I have in Seattle. and the funniest of funny is that I rarely talk to any of them. They’re just there when I need them, and vice versa.)

And that’s the set-up for the real funny. Yesterday I get an MSN message from my freind who came to the party with me, to which we were invited by E-vite. She received an SMS text message from her freind, saying that he has a spare set as well. I immediately contact ironymaiden via g-talk, although I normally interact with her via her livejournal account. The queen of the surface streets currently lives in my old house (which I moved into myself through a combination of gina’s freinds and ex-girlfreinds), and composes entries for her journal on my current boss’ old computer (co-workers).

I found a postcard from Bellingham residents (but not from the two that fall into the ex-girlfreind category) when I finally got home, and then relaxed secure in the knowledge that no-one else would be contacting me for another few hours.

There was not a single phone call involved in any of the above transactions.

This is a typical day for me.

Time to go interact with co-workers. Catch you all in a few hours.
