Media Trip Report – THE NEWSROOM (Season 2, episodes 1-3)
(originally published on facebook, November 26, 2022)
TL:DR; This is not the same show.
Content begins.
These are the same characters, with the same writers and directors. But these are absolutely not the same stories and scripts, and I’m not as invested as I could be.
However, at the same time this is a logical evolution of that story, and a valid continuation of same. If this was the second half of a 22 episode season, I would believe this was act two of three, and we’d be building to an even stronger finish than episode ten’s.
Maybe it’s because I couldn’t get the S1 commentary tracks to play. Maybe it’s because I haven’t had my first glass of wine for the night.
Maybe it’s the frame, a device I generally avoid in fiction.
I want to know more. I want to see more, and I’m not at all sure I’m going to get it.
This is not the same show, and that’s okay. It’s more like the British approach to serial television, which is something I like a great deal.
So I’m going to pour a glass of wine, prep a pizza, and dive into episodes 4-6 of nine.
Stay tuned.
