Explanation of trade
So that I don’t seem like a complete and total idiot, here’s what happened behind the scenes.
The instant I found out that Olerud was signing with the Yankees, I put in a move to re-acquire him. Unfortunately, our eagle eyed Commissioner was a fraction of a step ahead of me, but had not yet sent his notice to the other owners.
He agreed that we both had a valid claim on John, so we decided to allow a disinterested third party to decide the matter with a coin toss. I lost, and the Red Sox picked him up
During discussions later on, Jim confided that he was willing to trade Olerud, since he was picking him up for insurance, while I had a definite need for a 1b. we worked out a trade that sent Olerud and Gabe Kabler to me, for Alexis Rios. I also sent along the player I was going to cut, since I’m not into spending much more money on my fantasy team this year.
So, I wasn’t really trading Alexis Rios, one of the hottest hitters in the league, for Gabe Kapler. I was trading him for Kapler+Olerud. Still not the best trade, and not one I really wanted to make. It only looks like I did, because Jim engaged in some creative accounting.
But really, what choice did I have at 1B? Willie Bloomquist? Dave Hansen? I hear Edgar might even get his ancient legs trotted out to the sack in the next few months. That makes even less sense than cutting Olerud, but at least he’ll get some AB.
